Phone book, word
of mouth and physical review were
used to identify businesses in Catron
County, including ranches. Additionally,
notices were placed on community
bulletin boards, on web blogs and
on the economic development website,
and emails were sent to distribution
lists announcing the survey and requesting
participation in the survey, also
providing contact information and
the website URL. Although 252 possible
businesses were identified (see
side table), it quickly became
evident that not all these businesses
were currently viable, and that not
all business owners were willing
to participate.
Furthermore, given the constraints
of the short time available and the
reduced funding, focus was limited
to “main street” businesses;
i.e. businesses with storefronts
on the main streets of Catron County
villages. While NMEDD CCI calls for
annual follow-up surveys, and broader
scale survey should be performed
in the future, such wor will be dependent
upon availability of funding. Note
that while Catron County does not
have sufficient population for US
Census to perform mid-decade economic
surveys and therefore no state or
federal economic data is available
since 2000, this year’s census
will provide additional economic
information for the county.
Due to the extremely low number
of main street businesses (67 total),
findings are
presented solely as percentages and
ranges and are approximated in order
to protect the identification of
the sources.
